Volunteer calendars are great if you have folks in on a regular basis. Karen November, 2009.
After looking at the sample wikis, my favorite "new" use for a wiki is as a presentation tool for students. I was blown away by the Virtual Communication (Flat Classroom) Project on the sample school wiki. In this example the students were from opposite sides of the planet! I had not even considered using a wiki this way. I'll definitely share this possibility with our teachers. Lisa S. Nov. 2009
In the same vein as Lisa S., use the wiki format for group assignments. They need to synthesize what they want to create as the project/assignment, they need task assignments, once tasks are completed they go on to the wiki where other group members look at what work was done and what still needs to be done, corrected, verified, deleted, etc. The wiki may be where the assignment ends up; not always, so be prepared for this! The process works well with most 7th and 8th graders; for the group that can't create the wiki in the first place, a teacher template should be handy for them to get started. FAIbookworm 2010

I have been using podcasts for a couple of years with one particular class. The students' final projects are just fantastic. During April the teacher and I direct students to the poetry area of the library and read poems. Preparing for sea week (month), each student researches a mollusk. They write 2-3 poems about their critter. Using Garage Band we make a podcast. When all are finished, we have the parents in for a special viewing of the projects as we only post within district. As a journalism teacher I plan to have students create podcasts covering events around the school. For example, covering a basketball game, a field trip, students' thoughts on a school-related topic, etc... I have just purchased digital voice recorders which will allow students to conduct on the scene interviews which we can turn into a podcast. CSween 2010
Students often have to read a book of their choice, but of so many pages, and then write a book report. I teamed with the English teacher (10th grade) to have the students read their books, write 5 sentence summaries, then those who were willing, to create a podcast of their review which one could listen to on the library web page by clicking over the book cover that was posted there. Students could also do this with their favorite books, which they like to would recommend. Under Recommended Reading, the book title and author's name, when clicked on, gave a summary that included why the book was recommended. FAIbookworm 2010

Have students do a group read and then podcast a discussion of the book instead of the dreary old book report. the students could follow a criteria to help keep the discussion going. I could see this in a High School English class or a literature class. Judy C. July 2008

Teachers can use the image generator sites to create humorous images that can be added to classroom documents (assignments, etc) just for fun.

Creating posters with the image generator to promote school wide reading would be a great incentive. Staff and students could be highlighted as they; read in their favorite book or favorite reading spot, or most unusual places to read. Lynn H. July 2010
    Photo Editing
Gimp.org is used for photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It can also be used as a simple paint program. Some of the options it has is: photo enhancing, digital retouching, you can save your image in different formats. I think it is almost like Photoshop but easier! Mandy Y. 2008

    Photos and Image Generators
Please add your idea and signBigHugeLabs or Imagegenerator.org I like using this program like Robin08 suggested. I would have students select a magazine or a publication to put their own picture on the cover with your first namea short biography of why this image reflects some part of their personality. It would be a good way to get to know the class and last initial and the month/yearfor example someone who loves to Golf could use Golf Magazine, similarly one who loves photography could use that option. Students would have lots of ways to be creative from a simple project to a more challenging presentation. TanyaO June 2010

Flickr images: This could go in any category! A blog post by Dean Shareski modeling a thought process on creating quotes with images and a link to flickr streams of some examples of the great quotes and images.

I'd like to try to add a voice thread to a slide show that I created to show prospective families at my school the types of activities done in the library. This could also be used at the Alternative Fair as a way to showcase our school when we are offsite.

Voice Thread is on my planning list. I have started a library club and they're waiting for their first project. We'll use Voice Thread to develop a "How To" on using the library. The first series of voice threads will be geared to Kindergarten students. Images with accompanying instructions on library usage will be the first topic. We're in the middle of the year and many Kindes still have difficulty with locating the Everybody section and understanding how to use it. Some are already library "Pros", however. I can see the advantage of using both the library club members and these Kindergarten pros to instruct on the library's many uses and using voice thread to reach them. Later, as students go from beginners to seasoned library users, those who learn will become the teachers. Beth M, February, 2010
